Things that make you go hmmm…

“The notion that somehow the new kids on the block are taking over I think is a false notion. Ten years from now, our companies will be here; I’m not so sure about the new kids on the block.”

This statement was uttered earlier this week by future friend to the site and TimeWarner CEO, Dick Parson (strangely he has no Wikipedia entry). Of course he is right. 10 years from now TimeWarner, Viacom, News Corp, Sony and the rest will still be around. Just like radio didnt put newspapers out of business, it just made them smaller and less relevant, the “new kids on the block” wont put old media out of business. Smaller and less relevant…

You hit the nail on the head. The News Corps, Time Warners, and Viacoms of the world will remain however the must evolve to do so. Take one look at the “changing of the guard” taking place within the major record labels (EMI & Universal most recently) and you understand that they too see what is coming…a little late, but they see none-the-less.

I’m not sure I’d go so far as to say they all survive. I think a couple of them survive but certainly not all. Some will get gobbled up by other players, some will transform themselves into different entities and some will simply evaporate. The music biz is a great example of this there used to be 6 majors now there are 3.5 and none of them look terribly promising.

Hey, even “RCA” and “Zenith” are still around. What are they now? Sony’s forgotten label or some Chinese owned brand?

in 2017, Time warner probably would be bought by some new internet start up because they are tired of getting sued and decide to just buy the whole thing. Either that or Google needs Time warner real estate in midtown and buy decide to just buy the company and rip evrything out before putting a giant server mid town.
