I’ve got a decent size music collection. According to my MP3tunes stats I could listen to music continuously for 6 weeks straight and not hear the same song twice (dare i say my drives are well endowed). Depending on my mood, the phase of the moon and amount of sugar in my system, I could listen to everything from Alison Krauss to Zero 7. So why does Pandora insist to be calling me gay? Not even a manly gay figure like Rock Hudson or Big Gay Al, but a chanting, new-agey, lesbian.
Sure right now, my musical taste, and therefore my Pandora stations, are a bit “earthy”, full of chanting, angst ridden, love lorn women pining for the attention of some unattainable man (or woman as the case may be) but thats no reason for Pandora to judge me and make assumptions about MY “preferences”. Cant a man listen to Sia Furler, Amiee Mann, Ani DiFranco, Paula Cole and Fiona Apple without being told that you like “excessive vamping“, “throaty females” and as a result being feed an endless stream of chanting, angst ridden, love lorn, indie folk songstresses?
I know what your thinking, “thats the whole point of Pandora, matching your music taste with their music selections.” Your right, that is the point of Pandora but its still disturbing. I’m very comfortable with who I am, I order Cosmo’s with panache and authority despite the abuse heaped on me for doing it. But when some anonymous algorithm starts making judgments about my taste and decides that because I ordered a Cosmo I’ll only be served Amaretto Sour’s and Bay Brezze’s for the rest of the night, it bothers me. So what I love Amaretto Sour’s and Bay Brezze’s. Thats not the point!
